The installation has recently facilitated the deployment of US special operations aircraft to the Middle East, as well as refueling operations for fighter jets participating in North Sea drills.

Similarly, there are other U.S. military dog-working relationships with partner nations.

Over the weekend, U.S. Army kennel masters and Panama’s Policía Nacional service members partnered for PANAMAX 2026’s bilateral military working dog training at Policía Nacional’s Unidad Canina del Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen.

PANAMAX 2026 aims to enhance interoperability and bolster collective capacity to conduct complex multinational and all-domain operations, to ensure that commerce flows uninterrupted through the Panama Canal, while maintaining security and stability in the region.

The U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Corps introduced the War Dog Program, known as the “K-9 Corps,” in 1942.

The program aimed to train dogs for the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.

Members of the K-9 Corps were trained for 8 to 12 weeks.

After basic obedience training, they were sent through one of four specialized programs to prepare them for work as sentry dogs, scout or patrol dogs, messenger dogs, or mine-detection dogs
