High-Profile Couple Appears in Court Amid Expanding Criminal Case
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, once widely known as part of Britain’s first openly gay fathers to twins, and his partner Scott Hutchinson have appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court facing a significant escalation in criminal allegations, including 18 additional charges related to serious sexual offences.
The couple, aged 57 and 32 respectively, were arrested following a police raid on their Essex mansion last month. They now face multiple accusations including rape, sexual assault, and offences connected to alleged sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Both men have previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.
New Charges Added to Ongoing Investigation
Essex Police confirmed ahead of the latest court hearing that the investigation had expanded, resulting in 18 further charges being brought against the defendants.
Drewitt-Barlow now faces 15 additional counts, including allegations of sexual activity with a child, paying for sexual services of a child, rape, sexual assault, causing or inciting sexual activity, and facilitating sexual exploitation.
Hutchinson faces three additional charges, including two counts of rape and one count of causing or inciting sexual activity.
The alleged offences are said to involve four male complainants and are reported to have taken place across Essex and Manchester between April 2013 and January this year.
Allegations of Grooming and Exploitation
During earlier court proceedings, prosecutors outlined allegations that the defendants recruited young men before allegedly grooming them and subjecting them to sexual exploitation and assault.
Prosecutor Serena Berry described the accused as individuals who lived “multi-million-pound lifestyles” and had appeared in documentaries and reality television programmes. She told the court that the pair owned businesses in Essex and abroad, including Maldon and Tiptree Football Club.
Berry alleged that the defendants targeted vulnerable young males, establishing relationships with them before inviting them to private residences and other locations where the alleged offences took place.
According to the prosecution, the case involves a pattern of behaviour over several years, although all allegations remain unproven and subject to judicial process.
Specific Charges Outlined in Court
The court heard detailed breakdowns of the charges faced by each defendant.
Drewitt-Barlow faces accusations including three counts of sexual assault on a male, four counts of rape of a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel of a person with a view to exploitation.
Hutchinson faces one count of sexual assault on a male, one count of rape of a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel for exploitation purposes.
Both defendants have strongly denied all allegations through their legal representatives.
Defence barrister Oliver Snodin stated in court that the accusations are “strenuously denied,” emphasizing that the case will be contested in full during future hearings.
Arrests Follow Police Raid on Essex Mansion
The investigation escalated following a police raid on the couple’s Essex property last month. Authorities also carried out a subsequent search at the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium, following their arrest.
The couple’s detention has led to increased public attention, particularly due to their high-profile status and past media appearances.
An ITV documentary series featuring Drewitt-Barlow and his football club, titled Up The Jammers, has since been pulled from broadcast schedules.
Public Profile and Past Media Attention
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow first rose to public attention in the late 1990s alongside his former partner Tony Drewitt-Barlow, when they became the first same-sex couple in the United Kingdom to be legally recognized as parents on their children’s birth certificates.
The twins were born through a complex surrogacy arrangement involving donor eggs from one woman and a surrogate pregnancy carried by another. The couple each fathered one of the twins, although they have never publicly disclosed which child is biologically related to which parent.
Their story at the time was widely reported as a landmark moment in UK family law and LGBTQ+ rights, symbolizing changing social attitudes toward same-sex parenting.
In later years, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow continued to maintain a public profile through business ventures, television appearances, and ownership of non-league football club Maldon and Tiptree FC.
Investigation Expands and Remains Ongoing
Essex Police have confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities have established a dedicated incident room to handle information related to the case.
Members of the public who may have relevant information have been encouraged to contact investigators through the Major Incident Public Portal.
Police have not indicated whether further charges are expected, but the scale of the current allegations suggests that the inquiry may continue to develop.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Following their appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court, both defendants were remanded in custody.
They are due to return to court for a further hearing on 7 September, at which time they are expected to enter pleas in relation to the charges they face.
The upcoming hearing will be a key procedural stage in the case, as the court begins to move toward formal trial preparation.
Presumption of Innocence
While the allegations against Drewitt-Barlow and Hutchinson are extensive and serious, both individuals remain legally presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The judicial process will determine the outcome of the case based on evidence presented by both prosecution and defence teams.
A Case Attracting Widespread Attention
Given the defendants’ previous public profile, business interests, and historical significance in British LGBTQ+ family law, the case has attracted significant media attention.
However, legal experts emphasize that the proceedings must be conducted strictly within the framework of due process, ensuring that all allegations are properly examined before any conclusions are reached.
As the case continues to develop, it remains one of the most closely watched criminal proceedings involving a high-profile public figure in recent years.
